We statistically compare each school to schools that serve similar students. We consider the following school characteristics:
- Racial/ethnic composition of student population
- Proportion of students with LEP (limited English proficient) status
- Proportion of students receiving free or reduced price lunch
- Crime rates in students’ neighborhoods
- Socio-economic factors in students’ neighborhoods
- School size
- Type of school (selective enrollment or charter)
When we compare your school to similar schools, we are not identifying specific schools that are similar to yours; instead, we are controlling for the characteristics of your school to statistically identify what a school similar to yours would look like.
Sometimes, no similar school data are available. This is because the information is unavailable, or because there is no variation on some of the above categories. Alternative schools and special education schools, for example, would not see data for similar schools.
